2-2-21 Performance improvement for Bachmann 70 Ton Switchers (4)

Recently have been approached by a client to see how to improve the performance of a fleet of four Bachmann 70 ton switchers. His complaint is they are poor performers and are very noisy.

It seems to be a common problem. The gears on early versions had a tendency to crack, so that should be checked early.
This should be a fun project. The process will follow the steps outlined below:

  1. The first thing to do is quantify the performance of each engine upon receipt. This will include the recent G&TL test sequence. This will be done on DC & on DCC. Additionally, the noise will be measured using the dB meter on an iPhone. The noise signature will be made at several power settings. In DC, it will be measured at the supply voltages of 4, 6, 9, 12 & max. The 4 volt run will be changed to the SV voltage if appropriate.
  2. These results will be compared with some other switcher engines as appropriate.
    • a noise measurement for an Athearn Genesis NP F7A on DCC is 54 dB’s with a back ground noise of 51 dB’s.
  3. one of the engines will then be stripped down in steps
    1. remove the DCC module & repeat the DC performance & noise measurements
    2. Take it down to the motor only. Run motor by it self, measuring rpm, current & noise at several voltages.
    3. Lightly lube the bearings & repeat 2.
    4. re install motor & repeat DC test
    5. Add some vibration absorbers for the motor mount
    6. Clean & re lube truck gears and drive gear.
    7. re run DC test
    8. decide what to do next
  4. If successful repeat things that worked on the other three engines
  5. Run final tests with DCC in place to verify the improvements.
  6. Send them back to client
