Upgrade of Athearn GP9

Along the way, a beautifully painted & detailed Athearn BB shell was acquired for my collection.

Someone did a really good job detailing this unit fit a features.

My task was to find a suitable set of parts to make a great power engine with this shell:

  1. A frame was taken from a junk engine that was in a batch of other HO junk stuff on eBay.
  2. The trucks were made up from a dummy truck pair.
  3. The truck gears were from my parts set
  4. The wheel sets are the Athearn 42 in NS upgrade versions.
  5. The standard BB drive shaft & tower gears were out of my parts set.
  6. the electrical connections were based on the modified five wire post.
  7. The motor selected was from the Chinese Hi-Torque motors described in the 2020 Motor DOE test series.
  8. The unit was tested on DC with no electrical module, on fixed DC(Rail Pro) & on DCC (NCE DASR card mobile decoder).
  9. Three ounces of weight was added to maximize the performance.

Motor Specs:
5 pole machine 12V  Rotating speed:9100 rpm

The results were a very good performing engine the runs very quietly for a basic BB unit. The test results will be added to this post in the near future , check back again.
