2-9-21 Bachmann 70 T arrived

The engines arrived today.

A quick engine only run on all four.  This was on a DC lab supply at 12 volts.  Will do more detailed testing on both DC & DCC later.
The first impression:

  1. One drew a spike in current before starting.  The spike was around 1.4 amps.  Once it started it came down to an expected level
  2. The noise levels were lower than expected.  One was noticeable, the others were similar to other recent models.
  3. All four ran slowly.  Between 40 & 52 SMPH.  Would expect between 70 & 80 for this case.  Switchers are geared lower, but usually not this low
  4. At this condition, except for the one in item 1, they ran without visible hesitation.  The current readings were constant implying little or no torque wobble.

Will proceed with a step by step plan to get to the bottom of noise & performance issues.  This will include speeds for a nominal train, max number of cars on a 2.5% grade and power.

More later, thanks for stopping.
