7-19-21 new motor test series initiated on 5-19-21

5/16- ordered a PA chassis & one gear variation to run single shaft motor tests 

It is being built.

Nigel on remotor & regear has sent me five motors, with at least two more to follow in June. These are:

  1. Minebea SS10G0RTME- 10 mm square x 15 mm long with a 8 mm shaft length & a 1 mm shaft diameter.

12 volt RPM- 19541.4 rpm; Current draw- 0.19; Amps Torque Ratio- 1.284; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel with 20:1 GR- 102.3 smph

2. Minebea SE15HOSLTP- 16 mm square x 18 mm long with a 12 mm shaft length & a 2 mm shaft diameter.

12 volt RPM- 6330.6 rpm; Current draw- 0.05; Amps Torque Ratio- 1.0435; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel with 20:1 GR- 57.3 smph

3. Mabuchi SF266SH- 19 mm square x 26 mm long with a 13 mm shaft length & a 2 mm shaft diameter.

12 volt RPM- 3450.4 rpm; Current draw- 0.02; Amps Torque Ratio- 0.7658; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 31.3 smph

4. Minebea SE24M1LLCH- 24 mm square x 30 mm long with a 3 mm shaft length with a gear & a 2.4 mm shaft diameter.

12 volt RPM- 4145.6 rpm; Current draw- 0.10 Amps; Torque Ratio- 3.1871; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 37.6 smph

5. Mabuchi SF-266SA-1G160-  18 mm square x 26 mm long with a 16 mm shaft length & a 2 mm shaft diameter.

12 volt RPM- 7223 rpm; Current draw- 0.06 Amps; Torque Ratio- 1.0975; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 65.4 smph

6.- Hobbytown of Boston motor- 18 mm wide, 22 m tall & 32 mm long with dual 5 mm long shafts with a 2 mm diameter.

12 volt RPM- 9786.4 rpm; Current draw- 0.09 Amps; Torque Ratio- 1.2151; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 88.7 smph

7. Mabuchi FK-180SH Mabuchi motor- 18mm wide x 22 mm high x 36 mm long with a 7 mm shaft 2 mm in diameter

12 volt RPM- 14242.4 rpm; Current draw- 0.07 Amps; Torque Ratio- 0.6494; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 129 smph

8. Faulhaber 2224U012SR motor- 24 mm round x 28 mm long with a 7 mm shaft 2 mm in diameter

12 volt RPM- 7429 rpm; Current draw- 0.02 Amps; Torque Ratio- 0.3557; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 67.3 smph

9. NWSL 18336-9 motor 18 mm wide x 24 mm high x 33 mm long it’s a 24 mm shaft that is 2.4 mm in diameter.

12 volt RPM- 8800 rpm; Current draw- 0.12 Amps; Torque Ratio- X.XXX; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 79.7 smph

10. Japan Igarashi 182331 motor 18 mm wide x 24 mm high x 31 mm long it’s a 11 mm dual shaft that is 2 mm in diameter.

12 volt RPM- 10327.6 rpm; Current draw- 0.09 Amps; Torque Ratio- 1.1514; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 93.6 smph

11. Atlas China #2 (from 2020 set)

12 volt RPM- 10933.7 rpm; Current draw- 0.06 Amps; Torque Ratio- 0.725; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 99.1 smph

12. P1K #2 (from 2020 set)

13. Mashima 1833 #1 (from 2020 set)

12 volt RPM- 10349.8 rpm; Current draw- 0.05 Amps; Torque Ratio- 0,6383; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 93.8 smph

14. Mabachi RK-370CA motor 25 mm round 32 mm long it’s a 20 mm shaft that is 2 mm in diameter.

12 volt RPM- 20591 rpm; Current draw- 0..23 Amps; Torque Ratio- 1.098; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 95.9 smph

15. Mabachi SZ-286XB-1880 motor 18 mm square 47 mm long it’s a 30 mm shaft that is 2 mm in diameter.

12 volt RPM- 6450 rpm; Current draw- 0.14 Amps; Torque Ratio- 0.931; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 58.4 smph

Because of some other work & to better understand the relevance three additional motors are being added to this activity. These motors are from Tenshodo & Oriental brass steam engines.

16. Tenshodo open frame Pittman type motor from GN 2-8-8-2. 18 mm wide 22mm high 55 mm long with a 12 mm shaft that is 2 mm in diameter.

12 volt RPM- 15204 rpm; Current draw- 0.28 Amps; Torque Ratio- 1.477; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 138 smph.
This motor runs with a distinct wine sound. Which is amplified in the engine.

(7-19-21) 17. Tenshodo open frame Pittman type motor from GN 2-8-8-0. 16 mm wide 20 mm high 48 mm long with a 9 mm shaft that is 2.4 mm in diameter.

12 volt RPM- 13196 rpm; Current draw- 0.23 Amps; Torque Ratio- 0.671; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- 119 smph.
this motor should be a repeat of #16. It is here to show potential variation due to product or age. And surprise, it is a very different motor, smaller lower torque. The stall torque measures 1.21 compared to #16 2.66 measured level. The two engines vary in weight by 700 grams for this one & 817 grams for the #16 engine. The motor weights vary by 34 grams. 18. Sagami can motor from Oriental NP 4-8-4YY mm square YY mm long it’s a YY mm shaft that is YY mm in diameter.
12 volt RPM- XXX rpm; Current draw- X.XX Amps; Torque Ratio- X.XX; no slip HO speed for 42in wheel w 20:1 GR- XXX smph.


The plan is to run these motors by themselves & then in the HoB chassis

The engine tests could include:

  1. 3 motors in each set
  2. 2 gear ratios
  3. 3 engine weights
  4. 3 supply voltage inputs
  5. 3 grades
  6. …… 
    sets will be repeated for different motors.

The initial DOE design is shown here:

note- the grade variation has been changed to be from 1.9 to 3.1%. This is because the blocks to create these grades have been identified.

The TBD slots will be filled as the data & availability come in. The weight adder on the right is for the nominal engine case to account for the motor weight differences.

This will be added to until the actual testing starts.
